Prince Georges Feral Friends, SPCA is a group of people in and around Prince Georges County, Maryland, who are concerned about animal overpopulation and the wellbeing of feral cats in the area. Our activities include trapping, spay/neuter as well as other medical attention, and either returning the cats to a managed colony or, preferably, domesticating them and adopting them into good homes.

The care that we give our Feral Friends is based on a holistic approach to good health. We believe that the first line of defense against illness is good diet so we feed our cats only all-natural foods. We attempt, whenever possible to use natural treatments such as herbal or homeopathic medicines. We limit the use of antibiotics and other harmful chemicals.

Prince Georges Feral Friends is incorporated in the state of Maryland and is recongnized by the IRS as a non-profit organization.

You may have come to this page because you are concerned about feral cats. Even if you have no idea what to do, come with us and we will teach you how to rescue feral cats.

We can help you in many ways:

P.G. Ferals is an organization of volunteers. You can also help us in a number of ways. We have a variety of tasks that need to be done to promote the humane rescue of feral cats and the use of natural health care and grow the organization. Each person commits time and other resources as he or she chooses. There are no requirements, no obligations. All efforts are appreciated, both by the other members of the group and by our guest cats.

You may also have come to this page because you are looking for a companion cat to adopt. We have found that formerly feral cats can make the most loving pets of all. It seems that they understand what they have been rescued from and appreciate your attention all the more.

Some of the cats that we have rescued are available for adoption. You can visit with us at one of our regular adoption fairs at local PetCo stores, or visit PetFinder.Org and meet some of our cats.

Get involved with P.G.F.F. The best way to start is to attend one of our informal introductory meetings. These are regularly held on the second Sunday of every month, at various locations around the county. Look at the Notes.

Hands-on Trapping Techniques.

We discuss the process of humane trapping: planning and coordinating a trapping session, what to take with you when you go trapping, setting the trap, and handling the trap after you've got your cat. (We are planning trapping projects that will take place in the near future. Anyone who would like to be involved could benefit from this session. Look at the Notes.

Feral Cat Socialization Techniques.

We tell you how you can start with a feral cat that has been trapped and have the best success in transforming him into a lovable companion. There are a lot of tips that we can give to improve your chances. We will discuss the equipment that you will need to do it, and talk about safety -- both for you and the cat.

Hands-on Basic Cat/Kitten Care.

We bring together a lot of really simple techniques that a foster or caretaker can use to help keep cats healthy. These techniques are based on the P.G.F.F. policy of using holistic health care whenever possible. Many of these you will never hear about from your vet. (Anyone interested in doing cat/kitten visiting/care will learn what is needed from this session.)

Nathan Winograd, formerly of San Francisco, turned five people and three traps into 1,100 users of the SPCA's TNR program. With over 10,000 surgeries, the feral death rate at the city pound dropped by over 70%.
