Planned Giving Guide

Your love for animals is evident in life,
and your legacy can live on
long after you’re gone.

Consult Your Financial Advisor

Everyone’s financial situation is unique. This brochure can provide some helpful information, but it does not substitute for a professional tax attorney, accountant, or other financial advisor.

Help to Carry On the Mission of Prince Georges Feral Friends, S.P.C.A.

The educational mission of Prince Georges Feral Friends, S.P.C.A. is critical to the humane treatment of animals as well as humans in our county. Although we are not a sanctuary or a shelter, we teach people how to deal humanely with homeless cats, and promote the humane treatment of all animals and people though our diverse programs. All of these programs require funds for their continuation. Your gift can provide the ongoing support that is necessary.

Some Things You Need To Know About A Will

A Will is a legal document that expresses your intent for the distribution of your estate, your property, and assets, after your death.

A Bequest is a gift that you make though your will.

A Specific Bequest is a gift of a specific amount. Your will might say, “I hereby give and bequeath to Prince Georges Feral Friends, S.P.C.A., a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization located at 4203 Enterprise Rd., Bowie, MD 20720, tax ID #52-2230525, the sum of $_____ to be used for its general purposes.”

Your bequest does not have to be a dollar amount. It can be a percentage of the estate. It may also be a gift of securities (stocks, bonds, or mutual funds), property (such as real estate).

A Residuary Bequest is a gift of the remainder of your estate, after specific gifts have been made. Your will might say, “I hereby give and bequeath to Prince Georges Feral Friends, S.P.C.A., a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization located at 4203 Enterprise Rd., Bowie, MD 20720, tax ID #52-2230525, all the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, after providing for the specific provisions of the Will, to be used for its general purposes.” (Of course, you may, instead, specify a particular percentage of the remainder, rather than “all”.)

Other Ways to Give

There are many ways to give a gift outside of your will. Some examples are:

A Life Insurance policy can name Prince Georges Feral Friends, S.P.C.A. as the beneficiary, co-beneficiary, or contingent beneficiary.

Financial Accounts may be made payable on death to a named beneficiary, including a non-profit organization like Prince Georges Feral Friends, S.P.C.A.

Guidelines

Conditions on bequests can create problems when it comes time to decide if the condition has been met. Avoid placing conditions on bequests.

Describe the property in enough detail that there will be no doubt what you are referring to. Identify real estate by the address, bank accounts by number, etc.

Name the beneficiaries. If you name more than one, specify the share that each one is to receive.

If you name Prince Georges Feral Friends, S.P.C.A. as a beneficiary, use the full corporate name, “Prince Georges Feral Friends, S.P.C.A., Inc.” and specify Tax ID #52-2230525.

After You Write Your Will

You should make at least two copies of your will and have them notarized. You should leave one with your attorney or tax advisor and file one with the county. (It is not absolutely necessary to file with the county, but it can avoid confusion. Just remember that if you amend your will, you will have to file the amendment, also.)

If You Already Have A Will

You may wish to amend your will by adding a codicil with a bequest to Prince Georges Feral Friends, S.P.C.A. Be sure that you file a copy of the codicil with each copy of your original will.
